The King of Spain’s Grandchildren - Anton Raphael Mengs at Palazzo Pitti

until Jan. 7, 2018
Palazzo Pitti

With this exhibition, the Uffizi Galleries present the acquisition of a prestigious painting by Anton Raphael Mengs (Aussig, 1728 – Rome, 1779). The canvas features a painting method that draws from Velazquez and Goya and it portrays Ferdinando and Maria Anna, two grachildren of King Charles III of Spain. The Infantes, dressed in contemporary costumes, are  depicted inside Palazzo Pitti, where they lived with their parents.

Mengs, who was born in Bohemia and later became an adoptive Italian and Spaniard, had sought permission from King Charles III of Spain to travel to Rome so that he could pursue his study of the great Renaissance artist Raphael. The Spanish King, who loved Italy granted Mengs permission to make the trip but only on condition that he send him portraits from Florence of his young grandchildren, the children of his daughter María Luisa de Borbón y Sajonia and of Pietro Leopoldo of Lorraine.

Opening hours: Tue. - Sun. 08.15 - 18.50. The exhibition is included in the entrance ticket to Palazzo Pitti.
