The Japanese Renaissance. Nature in painted screens from the 15th to the 17th centuries

until Jan. 7,2018
Uffizi Galleries, Aula Maglabechiana

The first big exhibition of painted screens in Europe takes place at the Uffizi Galleries and consists of 39 Japanese works covering the period between the Muromachi and the early Edo – an era known as the Golden Age of Japanese Art (15th – 17th century). The extremely delicate paper artworks are folded screens (byōbu) and sliding doors (fusumae) portraying landscapes and nature.

These 39 artworks express the pantheistic attitude of the Shintoists that is so typical of the Japanese culture. They depict the beauty and whimsicality of the universe and the close relationship between the Japanese people and nature. The stunning painted screens have been collected from museums, temples and partly come from the Agency for Cultural Affairs of Japan. The exhibition wraps up the celebrations for 150 years of diplomatic relations between Italy and Japan.

The exhibition is included in the entrance ticket to the Uffizi Galleries.
