Leopoldo De' Medici Prince of Collectors

UNTIL JAN.21, 2018
TREASURY OF THE GRAND DUKES - Palazzo Pitti, Florence

Leopoldo De’ Medici (Florence, 1617 – 1675), who became Cardinal at the age of fifty, was one of the greatest collectors in Europe thanks to the vast scope of his interests and the astonishing amount of examples he gathered in his life. Availing himself of skilled agents, he collected sophisticated items in the most wide-ranging of fields: ancient and modern sculpture, coins, paintings, semi-precious stones and much more.

On the occasion of the fourth centenary of his birth, the Gallerie degli Uffizi celebrates Leopoldo De’ Medici showing to the public some of the treasures he put together: most of his collections were donated by his nephew, Grand Duke Cosimo III, to the Tuscan family’s principle museum. The exhibition is an attempt of representation of his taste and his discerning expertise in various fields, which contributed to the art treasures of Medici’s family with unique items.

Entrance: The exhibition is included in the entrance ticket to the Palazzo Pitti.
